NorCalPrepScores/ CalHiSports Athletes of the Week
Harold Abend-CalHiSports/NorCalPrepScore - 5/16/2008
We start out in the southern hills of Oakland at a school that in the short time since its first graduating class of 1962 has produced some mighty fine athletes.
There we honor a young man who epitomizes his coach, who after graduating from this very school, went on to become a major-league all star.
Our winner was so inspired by the coach’s return; he came back to baseball after missing his sophomore year due to injuries. What he hasn’t missed is a beat, either on the ballfield or in the jazz band where he also performs.
We then shoot almost straight across the bay to the hills on the Peninsula. There we honor a young woman who is from the most athletic family we’ve ever featured – and the first girl to be coached by her dad.
